Once Long Ago

Once long ago when the world and I were young

All things I saw were mine, I owned myself

And all around me was at my command,

The sea, the sky were marvels I could hold

And life so very easy to understand.

Now in a body slowly growing old

I smile upon the little human elf

Whose world is unexplained, his songs unsung.

Love came and dwelt a ruby in my heart.

I met the One above all space and time,

Creatrix of the heavenly galaxies

Who came to earth and put on human dress

To wake the spirit in man that it might seize

Eternal truth and towards the Light progress

And from the animal to Godhead climb

And never again from joy and beauty part.

Her body lies beneath the Service tree,

Her consciousness at work in every soul

Her beauty in me like a fire burns

That I may grow to image only Her

And quietly the inner being yearns

No longer in the dark of mind to err,

To give that I may reach the promised goal,

All I am or ever yet shall be.
